The Umhlanga Lighthouse
The Umhlanga Rocks Lighthouse is a place, a beacon, a memory, a warning a guide… Whatever it is to you, Marls has accurately captured this landmark on the Kwazulu-Natal North Coast. The painting was done from memory.
‘Umhlanga’ is a Zulu word meaning ‘to meet’ or the meeting place which is exactly what the lighthouse is. Many people will have organised to meet at ‘The Lighthouse’.
This painting was requested by Mary for Ivan following their visit to the wonderful Oyster Box hotel in Umhanga (Red Carnation Hotels).
